Marian Winslow Hungerford

Locally prominent artist and a grand-daughter of George R. Post who was the first owner of the carriage barn that became the home of the New Britain Art League, founded in 1928.

Biography/Description of Work

Her birth certificate lists her as ‘Marion Winslow Hungerford,’ but her social security name is ‘Marian W. Hungerford,’ and she herself spelled her given name one way or the other throughout her life. She attended Skidmore College, then Pratt Institute. Hers was the 3rd exhibition at the Lexington St. home of the New Britain Museum of American Art. She was a charter member of the New Britain Art League (her grandfather’s barn was the League’s permanent home) and had a solo exhibit there in 1983. She was also a member of the CT Acad. of Fine Arts and CT Women Painters. She summered in Old Lyme for many years and became a member of the Lyme Art Assoc. She exhibited with the Lyme Art Assoc. from 1931-1938. In the late 1930s she studied with its president, Gregory Smith. A painter in watercolor and oil, she did scenes of the CT shoreline and the area around New Britain. She lived with a sister and had a studio in their attic before moving South late in a very long life.
