Biography/Description of Work

Known for her paintings of prominent African Americans during the Harlem Renaissance, Waring grew up in Hartford. Her father, Rev. Robert Wheeler, was a pastor at Connecticut’s first all African American church; her mother was an amateur artist and teacher. Waring attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1914. She studied in Paris, and then lived and worked in Philadelphia.
