With its proximity to the cultural hub of New York City and its quieter suburban and rural landscapes, Connecticut was fertile ground for artists and writers in the period of Modernist movements between 1913 and 1979. Many of these cultural figures are well known through biographical and critical studies. Creative Places seeks to show how place played a significant role in creative work, and how in turn the artists and writers influenced communities in Connecticut.

- Description of Significance/Historical Narrative
- Aaron Kurzen acquired the land on which his house sits from the Weil family, friends through his teaching. In the 1950s, Kurzen purchased a Quonset hut for $300 in New York, and used it as the core of a summer and weekend home in Branford, together with lumber from a house that was being demolished in New Jersey. He built it himself, with some help from a professional builder. Listed on the State Register as part of the Creative Places project.
