With its proximity to the cultural hub of New York City and its quieter suburban and rural landscapes, Connecticut was fertile ground for artists and writers in the period of Modernist movements between 1913 and 1979. Many of these cultural figures are well known through biographical and critical studies. Creative Places seeks to show how place played a significant role in creative work, and how in turn the artists and writers influenced communities in Connecticut.

Now known as the UConn Depot Campus, the Puppet Arts Complex is located in one of the former dormitory facilities from c. 1960.

- The Mansfield Training School complex is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but only buildings from the 1930s and earlier are included in the nomination. The Puppet Arts program occupies a building built in the period of 1950-1970, located on Ahern Lane at the periphery of the campus area.
