With its proximity to the cultural hub of New York City and its quieter suburban and rural landscapes, Connecticut was fertile ground for artists and writers in the period of Modernist movements between 1913 and 1979. Many of these cultural figures are well known through biographical and critical studies. Creative Places seeks to show how place played a significant role in creative work, and how in turn the artists and writers influenced communities in Connecticut.

Katharine Ingham Brush (1901-1952) purchased the house, added two wings to the structure, and moved it to its present site in the midst of the depression in 1932.
- Description of Significance/Historical Narrative
- Located in the Haddam Center Historic District, this Colonial-period house is significant for its association with the prominent Brainerd family during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In its second incarnation as a Colonial Revival-style country estate, the ensemble of house, cottage, and grounds represents a sensitive adaptation of the original structure to contemporary fashion and functional needs of the early to mid-20th century. The site gains significance from its association with author Katharine Brush, a pioneering woman in journalism, best-selling novelist, and at the forefront of the new genre of writing for film during the early years of Hollywood cinema.
