With its proximity to the cultural hub of New York City and its quieter suburban and rural landscapes, Connecticut was fertile ground for artists and writers in the period of Modernist movements between 1913 and 1979. Many of these cultural figures are well known through biographical and critical studies. Creative Places seeks to show how place played a significant role in creative work, and how in turn the artists and writers influenced communities in Connecticut.

Merrill's apartment for 40 years was the upper floor of this building, where he hosted social and literary gathering.
- Description of Significance/Historical Narrative
- A contributing resource to the Stonington Borough Historic District, the building is also individually listed on the National Register as the home of noted American poet James Ingram Merrill and his partner David Noyes Jackson. Purchased in 1956, they used the third floor as their living space, adding an attic studio and rooftop deck. The quirky decor has been preserved, and the apartment is now home to a writers in residence program.
