Description of Significance/Historical Narrative
Associated with the Leavenworth family for much of its history, this house was sold in 1948 to Arthur Miller, prize-winning dramatist and one of the first of many celebrities who came to Roxbury. In addition to a house on the expansive 325 acre property, Miller built a 300 square foot studio amid trees and near a brook in 1958. It was here that he wrote a dozen plays (although not 'Death of a Salesman' written in 1949), and screenplays including "The Crucible" and "The Misfits." The studio was moved off-property c.2018 onto a municipal lot with the eventual potential donation to the town. As of 2023, the Arthur Miller Studio Project nonprofit is trying to raise funds to move it to the town library and open it to the public (see the AMWS website, https://www.arthurmillerstudio.org/).
