Charles Ives

Charles Ives' home from 1913 to his death in 1954.

Description of Significance/Historical Narrative
Charles Ives purchased this property for a summer retreat and built a home which became the family residence. Although he was often influenced by his childhood memories of Danbury, this quiet, serene location offered conditions conducive to composing prolifically. A retreat from noisy New York City, it was close enough to commute to his day job by train every day. The contents of the studio where Ives worked for forty years were donated by his grandson to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in Washington Heights, New York City, which recreated it in 2014. It is open during exhibition gallery hours and by special appointment.
