With its proximity to the cultural hub of New York City and its quieter suburban and rural landscapes, Connecticut was fertile ground for artists and writers in the period of Modernist movements between 1913 and 1979. Many of these cultural figures are well known through biographical and critical studies. Creative Places seeks to show how place played a significant role in creative work, and how in turn the artists and writers influenced communities in Connecticut.

- Description of Significance/Historical Narrative
- Significant as an 18th-century sea captain's house. Significant in the 20th century as one of three homes associated with the Norwich Art School and Slater Museum. It was used as a studio by Ozias Dodge, director at the Norwich Art School (1897-1910), who lived next door at 8 Mediterranean Lane with his wife. The home and studio were later purchased by Blanche Browning, also a onetime art school director.
