With its proximity to the cultural hub of New York City and its quieter suburban and rural landscapes, Connecticut was fertile ground for artists and writers in the period of Modernist movements between 1913 and 1979. Many of these cultural figures are well known through biographical and critical studies. Creative Places seeks to show how place played a significant role in creative work, and how in turn the artists and writers influenced communities in Connecticut.

At the entry to Christ Church is a c.1983 sculpture by Alice Dunbar. It illustrates the New Testament story of the miracle of the loaves and fishes.

- Architect Howard Hoppin of Providence, RI was engaged to design a building for Christ Church to replace its earlier 1824 structure to the north on this street. The 1983 sculpture of the 'Miracle of Loaves and Fishes' by Alice Dunbar, carved stone, was a gift of the parishioners and is a rare example of Dunbar's work in a public space. The church and rectory are located in the Pomfret Street Historic District.
