With its proximity to the cultural hub of New York City and its quieter suburban and rural landscapes, Connecticut was fertile ground for artists and writers in the period of Modernist movements between 1913 and 1979. Many of these cultural figures are well known through biographical and critical studies. Creative Places seeks to show how place played a significant role in creative work, and how in turn the artists and writers influenced communities in Connecticut.

Henderson and his wife Ruth purchased the property as a retreat which became a passion to preserve and use the farm, its buildings and their collections.

- Listed on the National Register for its significance as a dairy farmstead with its largely intact vernacular farm architecture and rural landscape associated with generations of the Hine and Buckingham families, the two properties were purchased by musician, impresario and composer Skitch Henderson and his wife Ruth in 1968 and 1972, who sought to preserve the property by finding practical uses for its buildings.
