Anna Hyatt Huntington

Anna Hyatt and Archer Huntington purchased this property in 1938 and named it Stanerigg.

Description of Significance/Historical Narrative
The Huntingtons had a profound love of nature and the beautiful landscape of their estate, from which they drew inspiration. Living here from 1938 to Anna's death in 1973, they rarely altered the land, and gave it to the State of Connecticut to prevent future development and preserve its scenic beauty. The 1955 bronze statues by Anna Hyatt Huntington at the entrance to what is now Collis P. Huntingston State Park speak to her love of nature and animals. As art in a public space, the monuments function as art for the people, much as the art of the WPA period was intended to do. The home the Huntingtons had built was demolished when the park was created.
