Alexander Calder's home and studio

Description of Significance/Historical Narrative
A well preserved 18th century Colonial, the house was built by a descendant of one of Woodbury's early settlers and remained in the family until the estate sold it and 18 acres to Alexander Calder in 1933. After a fire that damaged the house in the 1950s, Calder found the color of the charred wood so appealing that he painted the entire house black. In addition to the c.1940 attached studio, he built several concrete block free-standing studios. The property is still owned by the family and some of Calder's smaller works are displayed on the site.
