With its proximity to the cultural hub of New York City and its quieter suburban and rural landscapes, Connecticut was fertile ground for artists and writers in the period of Modernist movements between 1913 and 1979. Many of these cultural figures are well known through biographical and critical studies. Creative Places seeks to show how place played a significant role in creative work, and how in turn the artists and writers influenced communities in Connecticut.

- Description of Significance/Historical Narrative
- A contributing resource to the Higganum Landing Historic District, which illustrates the development of an active and important early New England shipbuilding community, the Kelly-Child House is one of two earliest remaining houses at the Landing both built by John Kelly. The house is also significant as the long-time home of artist Harold Barbour, who worked for the WPA art programs during the 1930s and continued as a commercial and fine artist living in this house until 1961. Barbour's family roots were in Haddam for generations; he lived in New York for a time and had this as a second home, before moving here permanently.
