With its proximity to the cultural hub of New York City and its quieter suburban and rural landscapes, Connecticut was fertile ground for artists and writers in the period of Modernist movements between 1913 and 1979. Many of these cultural figures are well known through biographical and critical studies. Creative Places seeks to show how place played a significant role in creative work, and how in turn the artists and writers influenced communities in Connecticut.

Artist James McManus purchased the property in 1934, and owned it for the rest of his life.
- Description of Significance/Historical Narrative
- Artist James Goodwin McManus spent summers in this house (a contributing resource in the Hamburg Bridge Historic District) from 1934 to his death in 1958, and painted many landscape scenes of the Lyme countryside. Like his neighbor Thomas Willoughby Nason he chose one of the more remote parts of the Lyme-Old Lyme artist colony area.
