With its proximity to the cultural hub of New York City and its quieter suburban and rural landscapes, Connecticut was fertile ground for artists and writers in the period of Modernist movements between 1913 and 1979. Many of these cultural figures are well known through biographical and critical studies. Creative Places seeks to show how place played a significant role in creative work, and how in turn the artists and writers influenced communities in Connecticut.

- Home of sculptor and teacher William Ashby McCloy from early 1980s to 1994. This home is adjacent to houses that were at various times homes of writer Blanche McCrary Boyd, of poet William Meredith and painter Rita Dawley (to the south). The small cluster along the west bank of the Thames River has been a location for artists, many associated with Connecticut College, from the time of Meredith's purchase in the late 1950s.
