With its proximity to the cultural hub of New York City and its quieter suburban and rural landscapes, Connecticut was fertile ground for artists and writers in the period of Modernist movements between 1913 and 1979. Many of these cultural figures are well known through biographical and critical studies. Creative Places seeks to show how place played a significant role in creative work, and how in turn the artists and writers influenced communities in Connecticut.

Edward Ferrari designed the ornamentation on the Comstock Hill Avenue Bridge on the Merritt Parkway in Norwalk.
- Description of Significance/Historical Narrative
- While George L. Dunkelberger designed the Merritt Parkway overpass and underpass bridges, sculptor Edward Ferrari executed the molds for the ornamentation. For the Comstock Hill Avenue bridge however, Ferrari also designed the decorative motifs of a Native American and a Pilgrim, as the earliest settlers to the New England area. The sculptures were created as art in a public space, they function as art for the people, much as the art of the WPA period was intended to do.
