Description of Significance/Historical Narrative
An intermediate maquette of the Mountains portion of Alexander Calder’s 'Mountains and Clouds' steel structure is installed on the grounds of the Minor Memorial Library. A smaller maquette was initially created for approval and fabrication purposes. The intermediate maquette was created as a structural test in 1976 and painted black to stand out in the stark white marble atrium of the building where the final product would be placed. The Mountains maquette consists of five triangular mountains of varying heights, the largest pierced with a circular hole, and two curving arcs. 'Mountains and Clouds' was Calder's last work, a stabile/mobile installed posthumously in the Hart Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C.
