With its proximity to the cultural hub of New York City and its quieter suburban and rural landscapes, Connecticut was fertile ground for artists and writers in the period of Modernist movements between 1913 and 1979. Many of these cultural figures are well known through biographical and critical studies. Creative Places seeks to show how place played a significant role in creative work, and how in turn the artists and writers influenced communities in Connecticut.

Rebecca Field Jones taught sculpture at Miss Porter's School in the 1950s and 1960s.
- Description of Significance/Historical Narrative
- Founded in 1843 by Sarah Porter, from an important local family, Miss Porter's School had risen to national prominence by the 1880s. In the twentieth century Miss Porter's School had a reputation for the arts, with teachers including notable Connecticut artists Robert Bolling Brandegee and Rebecca Field Jones. The former Union Hotel, built c.1830 to serve travelers on the Farmington Canal, now serves as the administration building for Miss Porter's School.
