Description of Significance/Historical Narrative
Founded in 1843 by Sarah Porter, from an important local family, Miss Porter's School had risen to national prominence by the 1880s. In the twentieth century Miss Porter's School had a reputation for the arts, with teachers including notable Connecticut artists Robert Bolling Brandegee and Rebecca Field Jones. The former Union Hotel, built c.1830 to serve travelers on the Farmington Canal, now serves as the administration building for Miss Porter's School.
