  • New Haven Rail Road Caboose
Herbert Matter

Herbert Matter designed the iconic New Haven Railroad logo on this caboose.

Description of Significance/Historical Narrative
This caboose is culturally significant as an example of the logo that changed the face of the New Haven Railroad. After the NHRR was absorbed by the Penn Central System, the train cars along with the track were sold off. This caboose was purchased, restored, and now serves as the Falls Village Visitor’s Center. The sleek design shows off the new graphic style that was beginning to be utilized in corporate marketing in the mid-20th century. The 'NH' logo designed in the 1950s can still be found on Shoreline East passenger trains.
