With its proximity to the cultural hub of New York City and its quieter suburban and rural landscapes, Connecticut was fertile ground for artists and writers in the period of Modernist movements between 1913 and 1979. Many of these cultural figures are well known through biographical and critical studies. Creative Places seeks to show how place played a significant role in creative work, and how in turn the artists and writers influenced communities in Connecticut.

- Originally a mid-19th century mill building, the Old Sasco Mill was the home of the Famous Artists School when it was first established in 1948. The location was ideal given its proximity to New York City and the local artist population. Its faculty included important illustrators such as Stevan Dohanos, Robert Fawcett, Fred Ludekens, and Norman Rockwell. The school went bankrupt but survives under different ownership in Wilton, and its archives are now in the collection of the Norman Rockwell Museum.
