Description of Significance/Historical Narrative
First built by Captain Amos Palmer in 1878 to replace a house that had burned, it was hit by cannon fire in the War of 1812. From 1837 to 1840, the house was occupied by Major George Washington Whistler, a railroad engineer, his wife, Anna Matilda McNeill Whistler, and their son, a young James McNeill Whistler. Starting in 1940, it became the home of poet Stephen Vincent Benét.
