With its proximity to the cultural hub of New York City and its quieter suburban and rural landscapes, Connecticut was fertile ground for artists and writers in the period of Modernist movements between 1913 and 1979. Many of these cultural figures are well known through biographical and critical studies. Creative Places seeks to show how place played a significant role in creative work, and how in turn the artists and writers influenced communities in Connecticut.

Putnam's new railroad station was across South Main Street from Gertrude Warner's childhood home, and the sight of railroad activity provided the inspiration for the use of the boxcar in her first Boxcar Children stories.
- Description of Significance/Historical Narrative
- The train station at 45-47 Main Street was completed in 1907 in an eclectic style with Mediterranean influenced terra cotta tile roof and coping and Tudor like brickwork and leaded diamond casement windows. A wood frame and clapboard railroad express office adjacent at 35 Main Street dates to c.1895.
