Putnam's new railroad station was across South Main Street from Gertrude Warner's childhood home, and the sight of railroad activity provided the inspiration for the use of the boxcar in her first Boxcar Children stories.

Description of Significance/Historical Narrative
The train station at 45-47 Main Street was completed in 1907 in an eclectic style with Mediterranean influenced terra cotta tile roof and coping and Tudor like brickwork and leaded diamond casement windows. A wood frame and clapboard railroad express office adjacent at 35 Main Street dates to c.1895.
