With its proximity to the cultural hub of New York City and its quieter suburban and rural landscapes, Connecticut was fertile ground for artists and writers in the period of Modernist movements between 1913 and 1979. Many of these cultural figures are well known through biographical and critical studies. Creative Places seeks to show how place played a significant role in creative work, and how in turn the artists and writers influenced communities in Connecticut.

- Description of Significance/Historical Narrative
- This house was built sometime before 1831 when it appears on a deed as the property of Sterling Shipman. It remained in the Shipman Family until the end of the nineteenth century. Since the mid-1970s it has been home and studio for Richard Ziemann, who built an addition in the 1980s. Ziemann's art interprets the landscape and its elements as he sees them in the woods and fields near his Connecticut home.
