The second pre-fabricated steel house built by Ames in 1933 during a period of interest in prefabricated structures.

Description of Significance/Historical Narrative
Known as the House of Steel or Steel House, this prefabricated, modular, International Style house was designed by Howard T. Fisher, who founded General Houses, Inc. in 1932. Made of steel insulated panels, the house was erected by Winslow Ames, art professor at Connecticut College and director of the Lyman Allyn Museum, in 1933.
