Thornton Wilder

House owned by Thornton Wilder from 1929 to his death.

Description of Significance/Historical Narrative
Wilder wrote his last novel, Theophilus North, in his study on this property where he also often worked on his other novels and writings. The house was built for the author in 1929, and he often referred to it as “the house the bridge built” since his earnings from "The Bridge at San Luis Rey" paid for it. It was a place for his parents to settle, and the family to gather during holidays and throughout the years. Wilder himself didn't settle there until later in life, when he lived with his sister, Isabel. Listed on the State Register as part of the Creative Places project.
