• Gilman, Charlotte Perkins

  Though she considered herself a humanist, Charlotte Perkins Gilman was internationally known in her lifetime as a feminist, socialist, and author. In the early twentieth century she was the leading public intellectual of the women’s movement. Now she is best known for her fiction, including ‘the Yellow Wallpaper,’ and ‘Herland.’ Though her most productive years were from the 1890s through the 1910s, in Norwich she continued to write articles on controversial topics such as birth control.

• Gorky, Arshile

  Arshile Gorky, influenced by and among the most renown Surrealist painters, in turn greatly influenced emerging Abstract Expressionism. Working in the studio at his home on Spring Lake Road, Gorky produced some of his last works of art, including ‘Dark Green Painting,’ ‘Red Painting,’ and ‘Last Painting.’ As a survivor of the Armenian Genocide, his works are thought to have been informed by the overwhelming suffering and loss it caused.

  During the mid-1930s, the Goulds directed a summer art gallery and school at the Four Corners in Marlborough. It was called the Central Connecticut Art Center. A group of artists from the area collaborated to present classes and exhibits. Artists involved included Harold Barbour, Albert McCutcheon, W. Langdon Kihn, Northam R. Gould, Hilda Anderson, F. VanVleet Tompkins, Henry Kreis, Helen Remsin, and Heinz Warneke.

  Renowned illustrator and author Hardie Gramatky created “Little Toot,” a beloved children’s book named a classic by the Library of Congress in 1969. He was also an accomplished watercolorist.

• Grebenstchikoff, George

  George Grebenstchikoff

  1882 – 1964

  Grebenstschikoff was responsible for several buildings in the Russian Village section of Southbury in addition to his cottages. The old printing presses, lithographic plates, and Cyrillic type still survive for the Alatas Print Shop, a publishing house he established to foster the dissemination of Russian culture. It published a Russian language paper and the work of several Russian authors, in addition to his own books. In keeping with his practical school of life philosophy, Grebenstchikoff and his wife Tatiana, an actress from Russia, became accomplished carpenters, actively participating in the construction of most of the early houses.

  Over the course of a 56-year career as a Norwich Free Academy art teacher and then director of its Slater Memorial Museum, Gualtieri leveraged his love of art into a vibrant scene in and around the city. He was integral in helping the Slater Museum build its reputation nationally.
